Creative Public Spaces – Binfluencers Street Performance

Binfluencers is a playful street performance project turning everyday bin use into something creative, celebratory, and a little bit extraordinary.

Born out of a shared interest in public space, community-led art, and the question of how we care for our towns, Binfluencers blends street theatre, participatory research, and environmental action. It invites people to look again at the humble bin, not just as infrastructure, but as a shared civic character within the life of a place.

Through humorous characters, public interactions, and participatory events, Binfluencers encourages people to engage with and “rate” their local public bins, opening up conversation about everyday infrastructure, care, and the creative potential of public space.

Themes emerging from this work include accessibility, visual design, maintenance, and the impact of small design details on behaviour and perception. Alongside this, residents have shared imaginative ideas for more colourful, characterful, and responsive bin designs.

Originally commissioned as part of the Ramsgate Pride in Place ‘Bring it to Life’ grant, Binfluencers focused on the Ramsgate Neighbourhood Board’s “Clean it Up” priority. Led by artist Becky Vincer, Binfluencers includes community artists including Nova Marshall, Lucy Stockton-Smith, and Bethany Chater.

What we’d like to do next

We believe Binfluencers has the potential to support people to take greater pride in their local environment through creative, participatory activity, including:

  • Street performances and interactive characters engaging the public in unexpected ways
  • Disco litter picks, turning clean-up into collective celebration
  • Bin rating walks exploring location, usability, accessibility, and visual design
  • School and community workshops designing imaginative bin identities and artwork
  • Public conversations about waste, responsibility, and shared spaces
  • Light-touch data gathering and storytelling from the streets
  • Community-led ideas for reimagining public bins and street infrastructure
