I was commissioned by Portsmouth Museums, part of Portsmouth City Council, to develop and deliver three participatory creative walks inspired by the city’s museum collections. The walks were aimed at those feeling isolated or anxious with some participants being referred by their GP.
The three walks started at a different city museum and I gave each person a toolkit of creative materials to keep. During the walks we looked at the local area from a new perspective, made art, and got to know each other.
- Urban Printmakers, inspired by the exhibition A Study in Sherlock
- Miniature Universe Photographers, inspired by the dioramas of the Portsmouth at Home display
- Collage Zine Makers, inspired by bricks marked with arrows at Southsea Castle
The walks took place in October, November and December 2021 with each finishing at a local café for tea and cake.
“Its been 7 years since I’ve been able to sit in a café without wearing noise cancelling headphones. I’ve been so absorbed in this activity and our conversation that I haven’t needed them at all. This is a new beginning for me, thank you!”

The project was funded by Arts Council England’s Thriving Communities scheme.
