Napoleon Hat Workshop | Ramsgate Festival

Role
Artist Facilitator

Brief
Design and deliver an accessible workshop for families linked to Ramsgate Festival’s Battle of Waterloo 200th Anniversary theme.

Workshop
Napoleon is popularly identified by his distinctive bicorn hat and the unique was he wore it. The convention of the time was to wear such hats with their corners pointing forward and back. In order to ensure he was instantly identifiable on the battlefield, Napoleon wore his sideways.1

Before the workshop I hand cut felt templates which were then fitted to each person’s head when they arrived. Participants were then able to adorn their bicorn with an emblem which represented their personality.
